Union Station was constructed in 1888. In 1900 over 200 trains a day were serviced, forcing the station to have an elevated station so as not to interfere with regular street traffic. Its architectural style is (Richardsonian) Romanesque Revival, made of granite and brick. It was second only to Chicago's Union Station as a Midwest railroad hub. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 14, 1982.
Henry Hering (1874-1949, American) Pro Patria, 1929 Bronze The spirit of the American soldier is celebrated in this statue of a young man draped in a flag. The artist said that he had "attempted to embody in this memorial the spirit father than the material concept of the soldier." While the piece reflects aspiration and valor, the artist suggested that the man reaching upward in exultation may also be interpreted as the soldier grasping for the olive branch of peace. The statue is located on the south steps of the Indiana War Memorial & Museum.
